Anyone can easily say that Durjoy Datta is an author who has hugely impacted readers in their reading journey, especially at the start. The easy language, gripping story, connectable characters, and romance, are a perfect combination for beginners and avid readers as well for comfort! And here he comes again with another story, that supports the mentioned characteristics above – World’s Worst Best Girlfriend.
World’s Best Girlfriend by Durjoy Datta is a contemporary romance fiction, showing the story of Daksh and Aanchal, who meet at a resort in Andamans. Having not many people from their age group, they aren’t left with any other options than being in the company of each other. But when the lower middle-class ambitious Aanchal and aimless upper-class Daksh are drawn to each other, days pass. Sorry, years. Four years! When they meet again, things change. Daksh is now carrying not only the house but his father and six-year-old sister as well! Would they be able to find ways into each other’s hearts? Read the book to know more.
The story carries all the elements that make it an intriguing, interesting, engaging, and gripping book. Once you start reading it, you won’t be able to put it down. A book that can be easily finished in a day or a sitting.
Both the protagonists are so well developed, and you can see their growth as a person. Daksh is that green flag character that everyone talks about when they talk about their bookish boyfriends. And Aanchal is a character that what she wants and she prioritizes herself, something which we all aspire to do.
If you have read Durjoy’s previous books, you can see the growth in the characterization as well as the sub-plots and their direct and deep impact on the characters and story. And that’s a treat to read. Daksh’s characterization in the second half of the book can move anyone to the core and Aanchal’s inner turmoil at each stage of life is relatable.
The dilemmas of the middle-class family include the constant nudging from parents for a proper education and well secure and settled job, the eternal twitch in the heart when you see someone doing something carelessly without thinking about the worry for the future, the need to prove oneself, be disciplined and at the same time do things that are prohibited, is so well shown here, that will strike a chord to so many of us.
The story rightfully shows sibling relationships, what real friendships look like, parents’ expression of love, care and worry, aim and ambitions, and taking a stand for oneself for our choices and priorities! And yes, the inter-college relationships of DU students as well (we see that drama in real life a lot as well).

This book at some moments reminds me of the web series “Badtameez Dil” starring Riddhi Dogra and Barun Sonti in lead roles. Although both the stories are poles apart, there are some moments in between the book where it resonates the same as the show did with me.
Although the story has its moments of ups and downs, where in between it becomes a little turbulent, it didn’t take away the wholesome reading experience. The story might be a little cringey for adults but for YA, it’s a good, relatable one! There are instances in between where one feels like slapping a character to do something sensible, you can’t do anything about it (naming the instances would be a spoiler, so if you have read it and want to discuss, ping me).
The ending is predictable and I expected more from it (ending in general and not just the last part), it astonishes and leaves a cliffhanger. And so the next part of it is much awaited already.
